I wake up in the cell bed, this time having zero trouble remembering where I am and whatâs been going on. The gnawing hunger in my stomach makes it impossible to forget.
Last night, Tristan told me to take the bed. He was still reading when I went to sleep. Heâs still reading now, at the opposite side of the cell, although heâs moved onto another bookâthe second of the series he started yesterday. While he reads, heâs idly holding the cross pendant hanging from his neck, his thumb brushing against its textured surface as if it's his lifeline.
Watching him sitting there, absorbed in his book, itâs impossible to deny how beautiful he is. Every angle of his face is shaped to perfection, and thereâs something timeless about him that makes him look like he could easily be the star in an old Hollywood movie.
I push myself up so Iâm sitting in bed, and he raises his gaze to look at me. The hollows under his eyes have grown worse, and thereâs something eerily predatory in his gaze that reminds me that Iâm in an increasing amount of danger every minute Iâm trapped in here with him.
Still, he gives me a small, warm smile. âYouâre awake,â he says simply.
âDid you sleep?â I ask, calmly and cautiously, as if any word I speak might cause him to break.
âA bit.â
He doesnât elaborate, and I donât ask for more details. Instead, I stand and make my way to the tiny bathroom to freshen up. All the important basic hygiene items have been supplied for us, and while itâs only a small thing, itâs certainly one Iâm grateful for.
Tristanâs breath catches when I re-enter the cell, and he immediately returns to playing with his necklace.
Itâs a coping mechanism, I realize. One to help him control his urge to feed on me.
Aware of his struggle, I sit back down on the bed. Itâs the farthest I can possibly get from him, aside from the bathroom, which wonât keep me safe for long if he decides to go on a starving rampage.
âWhen did you last feed?â I ask, since while he didnât feed yesterday morning, I donât know when he last ate before that.
He pauses for a second, releasing the necklace. âWednesday morning,â he admits.
Itâs Friday morning.
Two days have passed. He said he could last for three days, but with all that blood lossâ¦
Weâre pushing it with timing. Heâs trying to hold out, but I know the facts as well as he does.
Somethingâs going to have to give. And that âsomethingâ will have to be me.
But it's not just my life that's at risk.
âIf the witches knew the details about our situation, do you really think theyâd kill you for feeding on me?â I ask.
His eyes darken, as if heâs lost in thought, and he places his book down on the floor. âThe witches follow the law no matter what,â he says. âDominicâmy brotherânever fed on Jessica. They had no blood bond. They were together in secret for years, and in those years, I grew to love her like a sister.
